William Gerry was born in April 1802 in Ashwater, Devon, England. He was the eighth child of John Gerry and Elizabeth Parsons. 

He married Elizabeth Knight on December 5, 1826, in his hometown. They had four children during their marriage, William Gerry 1829; Elizabeth Gerry 1831; Mary Jane Gerry 1833 and Eliza Gerry 1838.

William died in January 1872 in Barnstaple, Devon, England, at the age of 69.
