Fred and Helen Shiels

Fredrick Johann Shiels was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on January 8, 1914. He was the third child of George and Rosa (Stefansson) Shiels. He had black hair and hazel eyes. He was the first son and he got a lot of attention from his sisters Mildred and Clara. His family moved to Craven, Sask where he got most of his education. He enjoyed riding horseback to the Qu’Appelle River to fish on weekends.

When he was thirteen years old, he spent a very lonely time in Regina Hospital with mastoid surgery. While he was in hospital, the family moved to Silton and then later to Strasburg before returning to Selkirk in 1929.

With his schooling finished, Fred started work on a small island on Lake Winnipeg packing fish. During the depression years, he rode the rods taking odd jobs sometimes stacking hay or grain just for food. He travelled to the Pacific Ocean and hopes to get back there. As there was less work in Eastern Canada, he only got to Nova Scotia before returning home. Fred spent a couple of summers working in concession booths in the Park before getting work in the General Store and later driving for Boreski’s Bakery.

One time when he stopped off too long on his way back to the bakery, his horse travelled several blocks back without him. Needless to say, he didn’t stop off anymore. This union ended in divorce.

Fred then married Helen Doty from Westbourne, Manitoba and they had two daughters; Marlene in 1949 and Nadine in 1960. Fred spent most of his later years doing maintenance work and helping make ice in curling clubs which he enjoyed. He was a very avid reader and loved sports.
