Doris Shiels was born November 22, 1918 north of Stoughton, Sask. She was the sixth child of John and Pearl (Gerry) Shiels. Doris moved from farm to farm with her parents when she was growing up. When Doris was only 10, her grandfather died and she went to stay with her grandmother for six weeks to keep her company. At the age of 15, her mother died and with her older sister Olive, they looked after the house and younger children.

On August 19, 1937 Doris married Garfield Blackwell in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Gar was born January 15, 1907. They moved to Stoughton, Saskatchewan where Gar worked as a mechanic for Sangster and Falliss. On August 15, 1938 Dorothy Margaret Blackwell was born. In the summer of 1939 they operated Gar’s Service and the family lived above the garage. On November 18, 1939, Donald John was born. In 1940 the family moved to Rocanville, Saskatchewan where Gar also worked as a mechanic. Marilyn Gayle was born there on August 7, 1942.

During the winter of 1944, Gar developed rheumatism and was bed-ridden for many months. In the spring of 1945, the family moved to Orangeville Junction (between Moosomin & Rocanville). Gar delivered gas to farmers. In the fall of 1945, they moved to Moosomin and Gar worked as a mechanic for a John Deere dealer. While there, Dorothy had taken very ill with pneumonia and also had an appendix attack. Her appendix had to be removed on January 1, 1947. Kenneth Earl was born on January 17, 1947.

Dorothy, Don & Marilyn were attending Moosomin school and one morning just before Christmas 1947, their school burnt to the ground. The kids were on their way to school when they saw the fire and did not know that it had been burning all night. Needless to say, they went home again as there was no school that day. There were Christmas presents under the tree ready for the concert that night and all was lost. Eatons store provided gifts for all the children and a concert was held in the community hall shortly after.

They moved to Grenfell, Manitoba in 1948. While there, Ken was hit by a slow moving paint truck in the back lane but wasn’t hurt badly and spent a couple of days in the hospital. Gar was taking treatments on his back in Brandon at the time and they found the trips back and forth to Brandon very long. As a result, they moved to Virden, Manitoba in 1949 to be closer. Marilyn was rushed to Virden hospital with ruptured appendix on the day they arrived in Virden. In the spring of 1950, they moved to Hamiota. Doris also had appendix problems in the fall of 1950. In the spring of 1951, they moved to Decker, Manitoba. In the summer of 1952, they moved to Souris, Manitoba where Gar operated his own garage once again called Gar’s Service. While in Souris, Ken & cousin Randy Lindbloom fell through the ice on the Souris River but luckily they were pulled out in time. Sharon Frances was born there on January 3, 1955. Sharon was the Souris New Years Baby that year.

In July 1955 the family moved to Napinka. Dorothy remained in Souris as she was working at the Dry Cleaners. The house was very cold and at Christmas, the family slept with parkas and socks on! In February 1956, they moved to warmer house in Melita. Gar worked as a mechanic for Bill Sterling and later for Jack Elliott. In October of 1956, the family moved to Pipestone, Manitoba to work for Jack Elliott’s new Massey Harris dealership. In December 1958 they moved back to Melita when Jack Elliott closed the Pipestone garage.

In the fall of 1961, Gar, Doris, Ken & Sharon moved to Waskada where Gar operated his own garage, Gar’s Service. Gar & Doris celebrated their 25th anniversary in Waskada in August 1962. In the fall of 1962, Marilyn had separated from Gerry Harbottle.

The family, along with Marilyn & children moved to Lafleche, Saskatchewan where they took over a garage and cafe. It was here that Marilyn met Wayne Reader. In the spring of 1963, the family, along with Marilyn & Wayne moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they stayed for four years. Gar worked for Wiley’s garage and Doris worked at Turk’s Upholstery & Mr. Shop.

In January 1966 they moved to Brandon, Manitoba where Gar worked for Massey Harris and Sharp’s Electric. Doris worked at Jean’s Upholstery. Marilyn & Wayne and children moved to Moose Jaw. While living in Brandon, Gar’s health started to deteriorate.

On August 19, 1972 Gar & Doris celebrated their 35th anniversary at Harold & Dorothy’s home at Forrest, Manitoba. On May 5, 1973, Gar, Doris & Sharon moved to Regina. Doris bought her own upholstery business and operated it out of her basement with Marilyn’s help for four years.

Gar spent a lot of time in the hospital starting in 1974, fighting emphysema, chronic heart failure and kidney problems. The summers were good for him and Gar & Doris flew to Ontario for three different years.

On August 19, 1977, Gar & Doris celebrated their 40th anniversary in Regina. This was a surprise for the happy couple as they expected only family and were pleasantly surprised to see lots of old friends. All children and 13 grandchildren were in attendance.

In the fall of 1979, an aneurism was discovered in Gar after an operation on his bladder. Cancer was found and he took radiation treatments and it was a success. On August 25, 1980, Gar had another aneurism operation. He suffered a slight stroke after and lost control of his right arm for some time. This was a blow to him as he loved to play the violin and now this was impossible. However in a few months, he was able to master playing the violin a little. He was a lover of old time and country music and spent many hours listening to tapes. In November 1980 he entered the hospital again with kidney problems.

On July 13, 1981, Gar entered the Pasqua hospital for the last time. The family sat with him night and day for six weeks. He knew everyone up to the end and on Sunday, August 23, 1981, Gar passed away.

In July 1984 Doris & Dorothy attended the Shiels Family Reunion in Ontario. Doris moved from Regina to Watson, Saskatchewan in 1985 when daughter, Marilyn and husband Wayne moved there to work at the Christian Education School. Wayne was the administrator and Marilyn was a teacher.

Doris moved back to Regina in November 1986 and moved into a basement suite at Don & Phyllis’s house. She moved into her own apartment in 1993. Doris moved to BC in 2010 to live with her daughter Marilyn. Doris died on January 19, 2015, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of 96.
