David Shiels was born about 1848 in Canongate Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the 5th child of George Shiels and Mary White.
In the 1861 census, David’s father George was listed as a Plowman and David was listed as an Ag Laborer.
On Nov 10, 1876, David married Jean Bain in St. Thomas Manse, Leith, Scotland.
In the 1881 census, David was listed as a Coal Carter. In 1891, he was a Quarryman and in 1901, he was a Stone Cutter.
David & Jean had 4 children, Jane Spowart Apr 2, 1877, Mary Ann Feb 1, 1879, Agnes Bain Jun 17, 1882 and David on Nov 16, 1884.
David died on Feb 27, 1921 at 2 Giford Park, Edinburgh when he was 73 years old. Jean died one month later on Mar 27, 1921 at Comiston Road Edinburgh, Scotland.
Jane Spowart Shiels (7th Gen) 1877-1947 & Colin Ledingham Millan
Jane Spowart Shiels was born on Apr 2, 1877 in Echobank Liberton Scotland. She was the 1st child of David Shiels & Jean Bain.
On Jul 29, 1898, Jane married Colin Ledingham Millan in Edinburgh. Colin was born Sept 27, 1875. He had joined the military on Oct 16, 1889 with the Royal Sco.
Jane & Colin had two children, Jean Bain Millan on Feb 11, 1899 and Colina Lidingham Millan on Nov 2, 1919.
Colin passed away on May 14, 1938 in Queen Mary Nursing Home in Edinburgh. Jane died on Mar 25, 1947 in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland when she was 69 years old.
Colina Lidingham Milan (8th Gen) 1919-1963 & Henry James Black
Colina Lidingham Millan was born on Nov 2, 1919. She was the 2nd child of Jane Spowart Shiels & Colin Ledingham Millan.
She married Henry James Black on Dec 9, 1941 in Edinburgh.
They had 3 daughters.
Colina passed away Nov 3, 1963 in Edinburgh and Henry died Apr 26, 1961.
Mary Ann Shiels (7th Gen) 1879-1945 & James Veitch Ruthven

She married James Veitch Ruthven on Nov 6, 1896 in Edinburgh. James was born in 1876 and worked as a Mason.
Mary Ann & James had 6 children. Jane Bain Ruthven was born on Feb 7, 1897, David Shiels Ruthven on Jul 16, 1900, William Ruthven on Aug 15, 1902, Agnes Shiels Ruthven on Oct 3, 1904, Jessie Brownlie Ruthven on Nov 7, 1909 and Isabella Gilchrist Ruthven in 1917.
Mary Ann died on Dec 22, 1945 at 149 Buccleuch Street, Edinburgh. James died on Feb 26, 1958 in the Parish of George Square, Edinburgh.
Agnes Bain Shiels (7th Gen) 1882-1957 & James Bruce & John Archer
Agnes Bain Shiels was born on Jun 16, 1882 in Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland. She was the 3rd child of David Shiels & Jean Bain.
She married James Bruce on Dec 15, 1905 in Edinburgh. They had a son David on Jan 11, 1912 in Edinburgh.
James Bruce died suddenly on Apr 22, 1914 in Edinburgh.
Agnes was married to John Archer in 1916 and John adopted David so he would be known as David Bruce Archer.
The family emigrated to Canada in 1920 and settled in Toronto. Two more children were born there, Jack Colin Archer on Oct 4, 1922 and Jean Agnes Archer in 1925. Jean only lived a short time and died on Apr 6, 1925.
Jack was killed in action during WWII on May 5, 1943. He was serving as an Air Gunner with the Royal Canadian Air Force at the time.
That left only David Bruce Archer to carry on the family name.
Agnes died on Jan 17, 1957 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

David Shiels was born on Nov 16, 1884 in Echobank, Liberton, Midlothian. He was the 4th child of David Shiels & Jean Bain.
On Apr 22, 1905, he married Isabella Gilchrist in St Giles Parish, Edinburgh.
They had 6 children, Jane Davie Shiels born Aug 14, 1904; David Shiels born Apr 2, 1907; John Gilchrist Shiels born in 1910; Mary Shiels born Sept 25, 1912; James Gilchrist Shiels born Mar 6, 1916 and Isabella Shiels born in 1919.
David’s wife Isabella died on Aug 6, 1923 when their youngest child was only 4 years old. David died on Sept 1, 1974 in Edinburgh Midlothian, Scotland when he was 89 years old.
Jane Davie Shiels (8th Gen) 1904-1984 & Kenneth Ross Archer
Jane Davie Shiels was born on Aug 14, 1904 in Edinburgh Midlothian, Scotland. She was the 1st child of David Shiels and Isabella Gilchrist.
Jane married Kenneth Ross Archer on Nov 18, 1924. They had one daughter Christina Mathison Ross Archer on May 21, 1925 in Edinburgh.
Kenneth was born Feb 10, 1901 and died May 5, 1926. He joined the military when he was 17 years old.
Jane died on Oct 10, 1984 in Haymarket Edinburgh Scotland.

David Shiels was born on Apr 2, 1907, in Edinburgh. He was the 2nd child of David Shiels and Isabella Gilchrist.
In 1935, he married Agnes Thomson Jack in St Giles, Edinburgh. Agnes was born in 1907. They had one daughter Nancy Jack Shiels, born on Sept 2, 1940.
David died on Dec 17, 1980 in Edinburgh. Agnes passed away Mar 27, 1996.
Nancy Jack Shiels (9th Gen) 1940-1996 & Paul Dean Jacobs
Nancy Jack Shiels was born Sept 2, 1940 in Haymarket, Edinburgh. She was the only child of David Shiels & Agnes Thomson Jack.
On Aug 21, 1965, Nancy married Paul Dean Jacobs. They emigrated to the United States and settled in Texas. Their daughter Brenda Jacobs was born on Jan 26, 1968 in Bexar, Texas.
Nancy died on Jun 23, 1996 in Volusia, Florida and Paul passed away on Jan 8, 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida.
John Gilchrist Shiels (8th Gen) 1910-1978 & Grace Drysdale McLean

He married Edith May Knott in Apr 1945 in Maidstone, Kent. They had one son, Robert Gilchrist Shiels, on Jan 25, 1953 in Maidstone. James died in Jul 1991 in Maidstone, Kent, England.
Robert Gilchrist Shiels (9th Gen) 1953-2014 & Irene E Mudd
Robert Gilchrist Shiels was born on Jan 25, 1953 in Maidstone, Kent. He was the only child of James Gilchrist Shiels & Edith May Knott.
He married Irene E Mudd in Apr 1974 in Maidstone. They had two sons and one daughter however we have no further info at this time.

Isabella Shiels (8th Gen) 1919-2014
Isabella Shiels was born in 1919 in Edinburgh. She was the 6th and youngest child of David Shiels and Isabella Gilchrist.
Isabella never married. In 1946, she was living on her own at 12 Gorgie Rd, Edinburgh.
Isabella died on Jun 6, 2014 in Edinburgh when she was 95 years old.
