Preamble:
This document on the Jones family was created by Dan Shiels. Dan’s mother was born Mary Elizabeth Jones in 1924. She married George Edwin Shiels & emigrated to Canada as a war bride following WW2.
This document is laid out from the earliest history to the most recent. Each generation is shown with a G1, G2, G3 etc. The first generation (G1) is Simon Jones, born in 1678. Simon was chosen to provide consistency in generations with the other families that Dan has documented. You will notice that Dan is listed as G10 which means he is the 10th generation under Simon.
For consistency, each heading will provide the Generation, Name, Birth & Death Date and Spouse. The birthdate for each is provided followed by the name of their parents. It is important to note the location of their births to see how the descendants expanded around the world. Although the family started in Wales and many descendants remained there, there were several descendants that also went to Canada, the United States of America and also Australia. These details are included in the appropriate sections.
The Jones family is a very common name around the world and we have tried to trace one small portion of the larger Jones family.
G1: Simon Jones 1678-1716 & Theadosiae Cowell
Simon Jones was born in 1678. He was baptised on Dec 8, 1678 at Llanddeiniolen, Caernarvonshire, Wales and his father’s name was Thomas Jones.
He married Theadosiae Cowell on July 8, 1697. They had two children during their marriage.
A son Simon was born on June 26, 1698.
A daughter Anne was born Mar 8, 1699 in Ribbesford, Worcester, England. We know that Anne died in 1771 at the age of 72 but have no further info on her.
Simon senior died Jan 16, 1716 at a very young age of 38. Theadosiae died Nov 15, 1756 at 78 years in Hertfordshire, England.
G2: Simon Jones 1698-1772 & Catherine Lewis
Simon Jones was born on June 26, 1698 in Ribbesford, Worcester, England. He was the first child of Simon Jones (1678-1716) and Theadosiae Cowell.
Simon Jones married Catherine Lewis on November 5, 1718, when he was 20 years old. They had two children during their marriage,
A son John Jones was born in 1720. (See G3: John Jones 1720-1778 below)
A son William Jones was born in May 1727. (See G3: William Jones 1727-1776 below)
Simon died in 1772 at the age of 74.
G3: John Jones 1720-1778 & Margaret Watkins
John Jones was born in 1720 in Clehonger, Herford, England. He was the first child of Simon Jones (1698)-1772) and Catherine Lewis.
John married Margaret Watkins on Dec 4, 1755 in St Mary’s Church in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales when he was 35 years old. They had seven children.
John Jones died in December 1778 at the age of 58 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales.

Thomas Jones was born on Nov 28, 1756 in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was the first child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. He never married. We have no other info on Thomas.
John Jones was born on Jul 16, 1758 in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was the second child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. We have no other info on John.
Margaret Jones was born on Aug 12, 1760 in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. She was the third child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. She never married and died in June 1828 at the age of 67.
Ann Jones was born on Mar 2, 1765 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales. She was the fourth child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. She married John Stedman on March 3, 1793, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. They had 11 children in 22 years. Ann died on January 2, 1857, in Dinmore, Herefordshire, England, at the impressive age of 91.

Gwenllian Jones was born on Sept 10, 1765 in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales and died two months later.
William Jones was born in Aug 1769 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales. He was the sixth child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. He married Margaret Walter on February 23, 1791, in Ystradfellte, Breconshire, Wales. William died in 1807 in Cwmdu, Breconshire, Wales, at the age of 38.
Thomas Jones was born on Feb 24, 1771 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales. He was the seventh child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins. We have no other info on Thomas.
There are no other details available on any of these descendants at this time although we hope to update them later.
G4: Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman
Ann Jones was born on Mar 2, 1765 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales. She was the fourth child of John Jones (1720-1778) and Margaret Watkins.
She married John Stedman on March 3, 1793, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. They had 11 children in 22 years. Ann died on January 2, 1857, in Dinmore, Herefordshire, England, at the impressive age of 91.

Edward Stedman was born in 1791 in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. He was the first child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. He died in June 1876 having lived a long life of 85 years.
Ann Stedman was born on July 9, 1793, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the second child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She married John Lello and they had five children together. After John Lello died, she then married Edward Meredith in October 1853 in Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales. Ann died on November 5, 1881, in her hometown, having lived a long life of 88 years.
John Smallman Stedman was born in 1794 in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. He was the third child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. He died as a child in 1802 in Shropshire, England.
Mary Stedman was born on February 27, 1795, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the fourth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She married James Edwards on March 10, 1814, in her hometown. They had one child, James, during their marriage. She died in 1869 in Bucknell, Shropshire, England, at the age of 74.
William Stedman was born on April 25, 1797, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. He was the fifth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. He married Charlotte Hull on February 9, 1853, in his hometown. They had three children during their marriage. He died on December 26, 1874, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England, having lived a long life of 77 years.
Elizabeth Stedman was born in 1799 in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the sixth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She married William Wall on February 24, 1825, in her hometown. They had four children in 10 years. She died in 1861 at the age of 62.
John Smallman II Stedman was born on January 2, 1803, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. He was the seventh child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. He married Maria Valentine on December 8, 1829, in Ludlow, Shropshire, England. They had four children during their marriage. He died on July 6, 1864, at the age of 61.
Richard Smallman Stedman was born on April 16, 1805, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. He was the eighth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. He married Mary Ann Burlton and they had five children together. After Mary Ann died, he then married Mary Ann Williams and they had six children together. He died on September 25, 1874, at the age of 69.
Jane Stedman was born on March 15, 1807, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the nineth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She had six sons and two daughters with Caleb Stedman. She died on August 11, 1896, in Stowe, Shropshire, England, having lived a long life of 89 years.
Caroline Stedman was born on January 20, 1811, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the tenth child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She married Peter Burlton and they had two children together. She then married Henry Dashwood and they had one son together. She died in May 1889 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England, having lived a long life of 78 years.
Charlotte Stedman was born on October 7, 1813, in Bucknell, Shropshire, England. She was the eleventh child of Ann Jones 1765-1857 & John Stedman. She married Thomas Sheriff on April 25, 1843, in her hometown. They had seven children in 11 years. She died on May 24, 1902, in Presteigne, Radnorshire, Wales, having lived a long life of 88 years.
G3: William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins
William Jones was born in May 1727 in Clehonger, Hereford, England. He was the second child of Simon Jones (1698) and Catherine Lewis.
William married Mary Tonkins on November 19, 1752. They had seven children in 19 years.
William died on March 18, 1776, when he was only 48. His youngest child was only 7 years old at the time. Mary died in 1809 when she was 82 years old.

William Jones was born in 1752 in Warwickshire, England. He was the second child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. He married Hannah Sanderson. They emigrated to the United States and had one child. He died in 1824 in Maryland, USA, at the age of 72. (See G4: William Jones 1752-1824)
Thomas Jones was born on February 23, 1756. He was the third child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. He married Susannah Bedford and they had five children. Thomas died on August 9, 1837, in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. (See G4: Thomas Jones 1756-1837)
John Jones was born in 1759. He was the fourth child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. He never married and died in January 1788 in Shropshire, England, at the age of 27. We have no other info on John.
Anne Jones was born on November 1, 1761. She was the fifth child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. We have no other info on Anne.
James Jones was born in 1765. He was the sixth child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. We have no other info on James.
Mary Jones was born on April 30, 1769. She was the seventh child of William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins. We have no other info on Mary.
G4: John William Jones 1750-1815 & Margaret Ann Griffiths
John William Jones was born in 1750 in Carmarthenshire, Wales. He was the first child for William Jones (1727) and Mary Tonkins.
John William Jones married Margaret Ann Griffiths in Hanmer, Flintshire, Wales, on April 20, 1766, when he was 16 years old.
They had 11 children in 23 years.
John William Jones died on May 12, 1815, at the age of 65. Margaret died on November 6, 1811, in Chester, Cheshire, England, at the age of 66.

William Jones was born in 1752 in Warwickshire, England. He was the second child of William Jones (1727) & Mary Tonkins.
He married Hannah Sanderson on May 14, 1778, in Herefordshire, England. They emigrated to the United States and had one child, Molley, during their marriage. He died in 1824 in Maryland, USA, at the age of 72.
G5: Molley Jones 1767-1798 & James Fegett
Molley Jones was born on August 9, 1767, in Westmoreland, Virginia, USA. She was the only child of William Jones (1752) and Hannah Sanderson.
She married James Fegett on December 2, 1789, in her hometown. They had one child, Daniel, during their marriage. She died as a young mother in 1798 in Westmoreland, Virginia, USA, at the age of 31.
G4: Thomas Jones 1756-1837 & Susannah Bedford
Thomas Jones was born on February 23, 1756. He was the third child of William Jones (1727) & Mary Tonkins.
He married Susannah Bedford on February 20, 1776, in his hometown. They had five children in 17 years. The children were Susannah 1776-1778; Thomas 1779-1861; Mary 1782-1842; John 1783; William 1784; Samuel 1787 and John 1794-1877. Their details are provided below.
Thomas died on August 9, 1837, in Hereford, Herefordshire, England, having lived a long life of 81 years.

Susannah Jones was born on December 19, 1776, in Clehonger, Herefordshire, England. She was the first child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford. She died as a child on February 11, 1778.

Thomas Jones was born on January 31, 1779 in Clehonger, Herefordshire, England. He was the second child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford. He married Mary Jones and they had a daughter Hannah in 1830. He died in 1861 having lived a long life of 82 years.
G5: Mary Jones 1782-1842 & John Oliver
Mary Jones was born on February 8, 1782, in Cardiganshire, Wales. She was the third child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford.
She married John Oliver in 1800 in her hometown. They had nine children in 23 years. She died on August 8, 1842, in Cardiganshire, Wales, at the age of 60.
G5: John Jones 1783 & Ruth Marie Jones
John Jones was born in 1783 in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. He was the fourth child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford.
He married Ruth Marie (Mary) Jones on Oct 24, 1835. They had three children, Emily Oct 24, 1835; Susannah Apr 9, 1843 and Alice in 1845.
Mary passed away in Oct 1895.
G6: Susannah Jones 1843 & Samuel Jones
Susannah Jones was born on April 9, 1843, in Herefordshire, England. She was the third child of John Jones (1783) and Ruth Marie (Mary) Jones.
She married Samuel Jones on September 23, 1861, in Madley, Herefordshire, England. They emigrated to Australia after they were married and had one child, Arthur Thomas Jones.
G7: Arthur Thomas Jones 1883-1952 & Alice Jane Simpson
Arthur Thomas Jones was born on January 14, 1883, in Narrabri, New South Wales, Australia. He was the first child of Susannah Jones (1843) & Samuel Jones.
He married Alice Jane Simpson on November 16, 1922, in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia. They had two children, Eric George on May 22, 1923 and Norman Cecil on Apr 4, 1933.
Arthur died in 1952 in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia, at the age of 69.
G8: Norman Cecil Jones 1933-2005 & Louisa Anne Jones
Norman Cecil Jones was born on April 4, 1933, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was the second child of Arthur Thomas Jones (1883) & Alice Jane Simpson.
Norman married Louisa Anne Jones and they had a son Brad.
Norman died on August 31, 2005, in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, at the age of 72, and was buried in Queensland, Australia.
G5: William Jones 1784 & Elizabeth Pritchard
William Jones was born on June 20, 1784, in Clehonger, Herefordshire, England. He was the third child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford. He married Elizabeth Pritchard and had two sons and one daughter, James 1821; Samuel 1822 and Elizabeth 1837.

Samuel Jones was born on February 4, 1787, in Clehonger, Herefordshire, England. He was the fourth child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford. Unfortunately we have no other info on this family.

John Jones was born on January 12, 1794, in Clehonger, Herefordshire, England. He was the fifth child of Thomas Jones (1756) and Susannah Bedford.
He married Lucy Williams on May 24, 1822, in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. They had five children in 13 years, John 1825; Samuel 1826; Ann 1831; William 1832 and James in 1838. John died on October 1, 1877, in Kington, Herefordshire, England, having lived a long life of 83 years.
