William Shiels was born Mar 17, 1844 in Straiton, Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland. He was baptized on Apr 14, 1844. He was the 3rd child of George Shiels and Mary White.

William had seven brothers and no sisters growing up. He married Helen Henderson on Mar 3, 1865 in Currie, Midlothian, Scotland. Helen was born Nov 23, 1842 also in Currie.

William and Helen had 8 children, George 1865, William 1867, George Kirkhope 1870, Elizabeth 1872, Mary 1876, Jessie 1878, Jane 1881 and Helen 1884.

The family lived in and around Currie all their lives. In the 1861 census, William was only 17 years old, and he was living in a Boarding house and working as a Blacksmith.

By the 1871 census, William had gone to work in the Paper Mill and worked there the rest of his life.

William & Helen suffered a great loss when their first child, George died when he was only a year old. They also lost their son William when he was only 10 years old.

William died on Apr 27, 1918 in Balerno, Currie, Midlothian, Scotland with the cause of death listed as a malignant tumour. Helen passed away on Jul 31, 1930 at the age of 87.

George Kirkhope Shiels (1870-1942) & Kate Louisa Bancroft & Frances Hannah May Jones

George Kirkhope Shiels was born Jun 6, 1870 in Currie, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the 3rd child of William Shiels and Helen Henderson.

In the 1891 census, George was 21 and still lived at home. He was listed as a Quarryman in the census.

On Oct 14, 1897, George married Kate Louisa Bancroft in Surrey, England. After the wedding, the family moved to England and settled in Shepherds Bush, London where their first two children were born, Joseph George in 1900 and William in 1901.

George had become a Police Constable in Shepherds Bush, London. In the 1911 census, he had become a Metropolitan Constable and the family had moved to West Ham in Essex where Clara Lilian was born in 1912.

Kate died on Jan 25, 1919 in West Ham, Essex when their youngest child was only 6 years old.

George married Frances Hannah May Jones on Jan 5, 1920 and Frances helped George raise the children.

Francis passed away on Jul 7, 1941 and George Kirkhope died Jul 3, 1942 at Essex Southwestern, Essex, England.

Elizabeth Shiels (1872-1954) & Robert Blythe Campbell

Elizabeth Shiels was born on Apr 21, 1872, Currie, Midlothian. She was the 4th child of William Shiels and Helen Henderson.

On Jul 4, 1891, she married Robert Blythe Campbell in Balorne, Currie. Robert was a Paper Finisher in the Paper Mill his whole life.

Elizabeth & Robert had 6 children. Alexander Bell Campbell 1892, William Shiels Campbell 1894, Eleanor Wright Campbell 1895, Robert Blyth Campbell 1899, Wemyss K Campbell 1901 and Stewart Campbell 1902.

The family suffered tragedy with the loss of their 5th child Wemyss at less than 1 year old. Their 1st child Alexander Bell Campbell was killed in action in WWI on Jun 22, 1917 and their 2nd son William Shiels Campbell was also killed in action in WWI on Nov 23, 1917, both in France.

Elizabeth died when she was 81 years old on 15 Feb 1954 in Markinch, Fife, Scotland.

Mary Shiels (1876-1942) & David Walker Herd

Mary Shiels was born about 1876 in Currie, Midlothian. She was the 5th child of William Shiels and Helen Henderson.

On the twenty-eighth day of Dec 1894 at Malleney West Lodge, Currie after Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland, David Walker Herd (Paper maker) bachelor, age 21, residing at Currie and Mary Shiels (Mill worker) spinster, age 18, residing at Malley West Lodge, Currie, were married.

David was a Papermaker and when WWI broke out, he joined up as a Private with the Cameronian (Scottish Rifles). He was killed in action on Nov 2, 1917.

Mary & David had 5 children. Robert 1895-1916, Ellen 1897-1973, Barbara 1899-1899, William 1901-1995 and Clair 1909-1910.

Tragedy hit this family several times. Two children died very young, Barbara when she was only 4 months old and Clair when she was only 19 months old. Son Robert died in the war on Aug 26, 1916 followed by his father David on Mar 23, 1918.

Mary lived to be 66 and she died in 1942 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Jessie Shiels  (1878)

Jessie Shiels was born about 1878 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. She was the 6th child of William Shiels and Helen Henderson.
