The Jones family is a very common name around the world and we have tried to trace one small portion of the larger Jones family. Our Jones Family comes from Wales. Although many descendants remained in Wales, there were a number of descendants that went to North America and also to Australia. Much of the data collected here is from Ancestry and a number of people included here completed their DNA testing to validate their ancestry.
This document on the Jones family was created by Dan Shiels. Dan’s mother was born Mary Elizabeth Jones in 1924 and she emigrated to Canada as a war bride following WW2.
The document is laid out from the earliest history to the more recent. Each generation is shown with a G1, G2, G3 etc. The first generation (G1) is Simon Jones born in 1678. Simon was chosen to provide consistency in generations with the other families that Dan has documented. You will notice that Dan is listed as G10 which means he is the 10th generation under Simon.
There are many branches to a tree and as the author of this document, I will show my direct ancestors as (Dan Shiels Ancestor) to make tracing easier.

G1: Simon Jones 1678-1716 & Theadosiae Cowell 1678-1756
Simon Jones was born in 1678. He was baptised on Dec 8, 1678 at Llanddeiniolen, Caernarvonshire, Wales and his father’s name was Thomas Jones.
He married Theadosiae Cowell on July 8, 1697. They had two children during their marriage.
A son Simon was born on June 26, 1698. A daughter Anne was born Mar 8, 1699 in Ribbesford, Worcester, England. We know that Anne died in 1771 at the age of 72 but have no further info on her.
Simon died Jan 16, 1716 at a very young age of 38. Theadosiae died Nov 15, 1756 at 78 years in Herfordshire, England.
G2: Simon Jones 1698-1772 & Catherine Lewis 1696
Simon Jones (Jr) was born on June 26, 1698 in Ribbesford, Worcester, England. He was the first child of Simon Jones (1678) and Theadosiae Cowell.
Simon Jones married Catherine Lewis on November 5, 1718, when he was 20 years old. They had two children during their marriage. A son John Jones was born in 1720 and a son William Jones was born in May 1727. Details of their histories are included below.
Simon died in 1772 at the age of 74.
G3: John Jones 1720-1778 & Margaret Watkins 1727
John Jones was born in 1720 in Clehonger, Herford, England. He was the first child of Simon Jones (1698) and Catherine Lewis.
John married Margaret Watkins on Dec 4, 1755 in St Mary’s Church in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales when he was 35 years old. They had seven children, Thomas 1756; John 1758; Margaret 1760; Ann 1764; Gwenllian 1765; William 1769 and Thomas 1771.
John Jones died in December 1778 at the age of 58 in Llywel, Breconshire, Wales.

G3: William Jones 1727-1776 & Mary Tonkins 1727-1809
William Jones was born in May 1727 in Clehonger, Hereford, England. He was the second child of Simon Jones (1698) and Catherine Lewis.
William married Mary Tonkins on November 19, 1752. They had seven children in 19 years, John William 1750; William 1752; Thomas 1756; John 1759; Anne 1761; James 1765 and Mary 1769.
William died on March 18, 1776, when he was only 48. His youngest child was only 7 years old at the time. Mary died in 1809 when she was 82 years old.
