G8: Jules Vandaele 1891-1979 & Marie Lepoudre
Jules Vandaele was born on January 4, 1891, in Ruddervoorde, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, to Marie-Louise (Ludovica) Dewitte, age 38, and Petrus Vandaele, age 40. In 1910, Jules & his older brother Charles decided to immigrate to Canada and ended up in Deloraine. Jules worked as a farmhand and worked for McLeods at Goodlands.
He married Marie Lepoudre in Deloraine, Manitoba, on February 16, 1914, when he was 23 years old. They started farming together in Lauder. In the fall of 1921, they purchased a farm south of Melita. When they moved, Jules and some neighbours were on the lead with all their belongings while Marie and the children followed behind the cattle with a horse & buggy and the family dog.
They had three children together, all born in Lauder. Bertha was born on January 25, 1915; Adolphe was born on April 27, 1916 and Laura was born on November 27, 1917.
In 1927, Jules & Marie spent the winter in Belgium and decided they would like to retire there some day. A couple of years later, they sold out and took the family with them to return to Belgium. After 9 months, they missed Canada so much that they returned to Melita.
Marie passed away on April 27, 1934, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 44. They had been married 20 years.
In the fall of 1941, Jules sold everything and moved to Winnipeg. His daughter Bertha & Maurice Cocquyt took over the farm.
Jules married Erma Cottinee in 1957 when he was 66 years old. They spent their winters in Florida and summers in Winnipeg. Erma passed away suddenly from a heart attack in 1976. Jules died on March 15, 1979, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 88.
G9: Bertha Vandaele 1915-2006 & Maurice Cocquyt
Bertha Vandaele was born on January 25, 1915, in Lauder, Manitoba, to Marie Lepoudre, age 25, and Jules Vandaele, age 24. Bertha Vandaele was born on January 25, 1915, in Lauder, Manitoba, to Marie Lepoudre, age 25, and Jules Vandaele, age 24.
She married Maurice Cocquyt in 1938 when she was 23 years old. They started farming together with Bertha’s parents and when they retired in 1942, Maurice and Bertha purchased the farm. In the spring of 1950, they moved into the town of Melita and built a new house there. They continued to farm from town until their son was old enough to take over the farm.
They had three children during their marriage. Larry Paul Cocquyt was born on June 20, 1939; Terrance William Cocquyt was born in 1947 and Debra Ann Lee Cocquyt.
Maurice passed away from Cancer in Oct 1979. Bertha died on December 3, 2006, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 91.
G10: Larry Paul Cocquyt 1939 & Della Cayer
Larry Paul Cocquyt was born on June 20, 1939, in Deloraine, Manitoba, to Bertha Vandaele, age 24, and Maurice Cocquyt, age 26.
He graduated from Success Business College in Winnipeg and worked in Winnipeg for a few years.
He married Della Cayer on April 4, 1964, when he was 24 years old. After the marriage, they decided to go home and work on the farm, first with his father and then they bought the farm. They lived in a trailer for a few years and built a house in 1968.
They have four children, Jacquie was born in 1965; Joella was born in 1966; Jamie was born in 1971 and Jennifer was born in 1973.
G10: Terrance William Cocquyt 1947 & Sylvia Edgar
Terrance William Cocquyt was born in 1947 in Melita, Manitoba, to Bertha Vandaele, age 32, and Maurice Cocquyt, age 34.
He attended a Diploma Course in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba and accepted a job doing soil testing at the lab.
He married Sylvia Edgar on October 4, 1969, when he was 22 years old. After their wedding, they also returned to farming and bought their own farm near Melita.
They have four children, Sam Cocquyt in 1973; Jose Cocquyt born in 1975; Andrew Cocquyt born in 1977 and Christine Cocquyt born in 1979.
G10: Debra Ann Lee Cocquyt & Alan Johnson
Debra Ann Lee Cocquyt was the youngest child of Bertha Vandaele and Maurice Cocquyt.
Debra graduated as a Radiologist Technician in 1979. She accepted a job in Churchill, Manitoba.
She married Alan Johnson on February 21, 1981. They had one daughter Nicole Lee Ann Johnson born December 26, 1981.
G9: Adolphe Vandaele 1916-1962 & Germaine Lea Colleaux
Adolphe Vandaele was born on April 27, 1916, in Lauder, Manitoba, to Marie Lepoudre, age 26, and Jules Vandaele, age 25.
He married Germaine Lea Colleaux in 1941 in Wauchope, Saskatchewan. They farmed for a number of years in the area and then sold and moved to Winnipeg. Adolphe then became a male nurse.
They had five children during their marriage, Joanne (1943), Laura Jane (1947), Barbara, Judith & Larry.
Adolphe died in 1962 at the age of 46. Germaine died in 1963.
G9: Laura Vandaele 1917-2008 & Harry Carels
Laura Vandaele was born on November 27, 1917, in Lauder, Manitoba, to Marie Lepoudre, age 28, and Jules Vandaele, age 26.
She married Harry Carels in Deloraine, Manitoba, in March 1938 when she was 20 years old. Harry’s brother Charles married Laura’s cousin Julia Vandaele.
Harry was the manager of the British American Oil Company until his retirement in 1964. Harry died Apr 4, 1964.
They had four children during their marriage, Ilene; Ronald; Curtis and Wayne.
Laura died on August 7, 2008, in Deloraine, Manitoba, at the age of 90.
