G9: Gustaf Vandaele 1893-1975 & Ghislaine Pyfferoen
Gustaf Vandaele was born on January 21, 1893, in Ruddervoorde, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, to Marie-Louise (Ludovica) Dewitte, age 40, and Petrus Vandaele, age 42. He married Ghislaine Pyfferoen on May 8, 1919 when he was 26 years old.
They had two children during their marriage, a daughter Maria was born in 1920 and passed away that same day. A daughter Julia was born on June 30, 1921, in Torhout, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Gus, Ghislaine and Julia left Antwerp, Belgium and immigrated to Canada. Their ship, the Penny arrived on Apr 30, 1927 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They moved west and arrived in Melita, Manitoba on May8, where they lived out the rest of their lives.
They went to Gus’s brother Jules farm in the Chesterfield distict.Gus worked there for a year and then took over his brother’s farm when they went back to Belgium.When Jules returned, Gus and his family moved to another farm in the area and ended up buying the Robson farm. They had a lot of hardships as they lived through the dirty thirties. Gus would cut the thistles from the field and hand grind them to feed them to the cattle in the winter. They retired from the farm and moved into Metita in 1947.
Gustaf died on April 28, 1975, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 82. Ghislaine died on January 13, 1981, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 84.She had been confined to a wheelchair for 10 years.
G10: Julia Vandaele 1921-2008 & Charles Oscar Carels
Julia Vandaele was born on June 30, 1921, in Torhout, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, to Ghislaine Pyfferoen, age 24, and Gustaf Vandaele, age 28. She immigrated with her parents in 1927 and settled in Melita.
She married Charles Oscar Carels on June 10, 1937, in Deloraine, Manitoba.
They had three children in 14 years. Ken was born on January 19, 1938; Bette was born on October 15, 1946 and Terry was born on February 16, 1952.
Charles Oscar Carels passed away on April 11, 1985, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 74. They had been married 47 years.
Julia died on March 3, 2008, in Melita, Manitoba, at the age of 86.
G11: Ken Carels 1938-2005 & Ellen Cooper
Ken Carels was born on January 19, 1938, in Melita, Manitoba, to Julia Vandaele, age 16, and Charles Oscar Carels, age 27. He married Ellen Cooper in Minnedosa, Manitoba, on August 4, 1958, when he was 20 years old.
They had two children during their marriage, Michelle Marie Carels was born on February 25, 1964, and Carleen Ann Carels was born on March 27, 1966.
Ken worked at the Royal Bank in Brandon and Crysal City before returning to Melita to manage the Red and White store for his father. In 1973, he took ownership of the store.
Ken died on January 26, 2005, in his hometown at the age of 67.
G11: Bette Carles 1946 & Curtis Leganchuk
Bette Carels was born on October 15, 1946, in Melita, Manitoba, to Julia Vandaele, age 25, and Charles Oscar Carels, age 36. She married Curtis Leganchuk on August 3, 1968, when she was 21 years old.
Betty took a Stenography couse and worked in the Assiniboine Hospital in Brandon for 2 years and then at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg from 1967 to 1978.
They have two daughters, Krista Leganchuk and Dayna Leganchuk.
G11: Terry Carels 1952-2014 & Louise Wright
Terry Carels was born on February 16, 1952, in Deloraine, Manitoba, to Julia Vandaele, age 30, and Charles Oscar Carels, age 41. He married Louise Wright in Melita, Manitoba, on August 11, 1973, when he was 21 years old.
They had two children during their marriage, Carmen Maria Carels was born on May 25, 1976 and Stephen William Charles Carels was born on July 29, 1979.
Terry died on November 21, 2014, at the age of 62, and was buried in Melita, Manitoba.
