Making Shiels.ca Easier to Find
With the rebuilding of the family-history pages largely complete, attention turned to making sure Shiels.ca could be found easily and worked properly for visitors.
The website was reviewed for search engines, photographs were given descriptive information where appropriate, and the main family pages were submitted to Google for indexing. Work also began with Microsoft Bing so that the family history would have the opportunity to appear in searches beyond Google.
At the same time, the technical side of the website received some attention. Performance and caching settings were reviewed, and secure HTTPS connections were checked to ensure visitors were directed to the secure version of Shiels.ca.
These changes were less visible than adding a new family story or restoring an old photograph, but they were an important part of the project. Preserving family history has little value if future generations cannot find it, and the goal is for Shiels.ca to remain accessible and useful for many years to come.
